Volunteer Focus: Morag Bishop

There are many, many committed volunteers at Beacon Place, but there is only one, that brings a wee bit of a Scottish flair to the role, and that is Morag Bishop.  Scottish by birth, Morag and her English husband Kevin who serves as Beacon Place Board President, have been heavily involved over the last several years. Morag feels that the strong connection to entire families are what make Beacon Place so special.  “The commitment that these parents have to try and do the best that they can for their children is so incredible. I am deeply touched by the trust they have in those of us at Beacon Place to guide them and their children.”

Morag walked into the yard at Beacon Place in the summer of 2015 through a referral from a friend, and has been walking back in many times since. She currently shares her time 3 days a week dedicating up to 40 hours a month to working with the children at Beacon Place. She does not have a favorite age group to work with and last summer really enjoyed being one of the leaders of the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) enrichment program and delivered to all ages of 2nd graders through high school. “ It was an amazing curriculum and so interesting to see it absorbed at all different age levels!”

Morag is one of those special people who can immediately make anyone feel comfortable. She is especially proud however of the connections she has made with some of our middle school students. “It is hard to be a teen or tween and get excited about learning after school or in the summer when you might wish you could just be hanging with your friends. But I have worked hard to connect and I am really seeing some of these young students

mature and thrive! I find myself really enjoying being with them as young people.”

With her son Calum settled into college at Lehigh University, and a departure from a long career in Human Resources at PARAXEL, Morag knew that she was ready to begin to give back, and give is what she has done. Her time, her energy, her support, and most of all her kindness and love. “I see the need in this community, but it comes with hugs, smiles, and some really, really, good kids and families. I really feel lucky just to be a part of this!”

Want to join Morag in making an impact in someone’s life? We are always looking for volunteers – neighbors who live in communities nearby, that care about the children and families who live a few mi

les away, face challenges that be a world apart, but are willing to work hard to overcome. Like so many of us, they are just looking for a friend, a partner for guidance and support.
